Today's Smart Homes – Tomorrow's Security Breaches Part I

This article is the first in a series on the technology being embedded in 'smart homes.' Everything from refrigerators and ovens to heating and cooling systems are connected to the Internet. This opens a Pandora's box of cyber security issues.

If you have a little one at home, chances are you own a baby monitor. They are your "window on their world" when you are not by their side. They provide you with comfort and peace of mind that you are aware of your creature's every move and every need. Yet a recent study showed that several of the more popular internet-connected baby monitors lack basic security features, leaving them vulnerable to common hacking tools.

It is scary enough to consider that a stranger may be watching your baby's every move but consider this: A hacked monitor could provide access to other wifi-enabled devices and that means your personal data and other critical information may also be victimized by a hacker. This means that even a company's computer system may be accessed by something as innocent as an employee working from home.
